Overview

Position Summary

The Shipboard Lead Tech reports to the Shipboard Production Manager within Transcat’s Marine division and partners with a team of technicians aboard US Naval ships to calibrate and replace shipboard installed gauges and meters. This job requires greater than 25% travel to service applicable customers. This could be international travel or US wide (occasionally). 

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned jobs by Project Manager from start to finish.
  • Maintain job paperwork from start to finish and produce daily worksheets.
  • Manage Shipboard Technician day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Meet with customers daily to keep them informed of our progress.
  • Train, advise, and lead lower-level technicians.
  • Will be a combination of office and naval ships. 
  • Conduct independent research when necessary.
  • Coordinate and manage daily workloads without direction from manager.
  • Identify and utilize appropriate measurement techniques.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration for pressure gauges, RPM indicators, temperature measurement devices and other related equipment found on board US Navy ships.
  • Determine the correct measurement tools and equipment needed to perform applicable maintenance and calibrations. Substitute for appropriate standards when necessary.
  • Conduct test and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality and/or performance compliance.
  • Apply measurement science principles and mathematical methods to record and report all findings accurately.
  • Interpret measurement findings and determine and implement best course of corrective action (i.e., adjust versus replace).
  • Identify equipment failures and remove/replace as needed.
  • Model the Company’s values to influence others to perform in an aligned manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have knowledge of the marine and ship repair industry.
  • Must have knowledge of measurement science principles and be able to independently calibrate equipment and remove/install instruments.
  • Must be able to calculate specifications/tolerances.
  • Must be able to properly analyze results, including statements of conformity or opinions and interpretations.
  • Must be able and willing to travel worldwide (more than 25% required), occasional weekends and periods of 2+ weeks of consecutive travel
  • Must have a US Passport or the ability to obtain one
  • Must be able to access naval bases and shipyards
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be able to work in small or confined spaces
  • 3+ years of driving experience with a valid driver’s license
  • Well spoken, articulate, good with customers. 

 

Education and Experience

  • 2-Year experience from a technical school or equivalent experience within military and/or calibration industry
  • Minimal of 5 years of leadership experience required (marine or shipyard experience is preferred).
