Transcat is seeking a skilled Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician to support expanding operations at our Oak Ridge, TN site. This role goes beyond traditional calibration, focusing heavily on instrumentation, troubleshooting, and field repair in complex industrial environments. This is a great opportunity for someone with a strong background in metrology, instrumentation, and industrial control systems who thrives in environments such as pharmaceutical, petrochemical, nuclear, or heavy industrial facilities.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair instrumentation and electrical (I&E) devices, including temperature, pressure, and flow sensors, switches, and valves (pneumatic and electronic).
  • Read and interpret P&ID diagrams and work with programs such as Set Route for electrical verification and component tracking.
  • Support calibration staff by providing technical expertise, including troubleshooting field equipment and evaluating repair vs. replacement decisions.
  • Diagnose and repair issues in-field; determine if recalibration is sufficient or if equipment replacement is necessary.
  • Assist in the assembly, disassembly, and wiring of systems per manufacturer specs, blueprints, and plant engineering drawings.
  • Provide support in the identification, testing, and verification of various instrumentation systems.
  • Maintain adherence to industrial safety standards and follow site-specific compliance protocols.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship (mandatory due to access requirements for a Department of Energy site)
  • 3–5+ years of experience in instrumentation and control (I&C), ideally in nuclear, petrochemical, or pharmaceutical environments
  • Strong understanding of valve work, instrumentation troubleshooting, and field-level diagnostics
  • Familiarity with calibration principles and the ability to support calibration technicians
  • Comfortable working hands-on with complex systems; not limited to bench calibration
  • Experience with electrical systems, pneumatic systems, and multimeters
  • Knowledge of P&ID diagrams, Set Route, or other plant control system tools is a plus
  • Understanding of industrial safety protocols and proper use of PPE

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as an I&E Technician, with strong electrical and instrumentation background
  • Ability to make informed decisions on repairing vs. replacing complex systems
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting processes for both electronic and mechanical control devices
  • Perform mechanical mounting and electrical wiring of process instruments and controls desired.
  • Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), plant lighting systems, and thermostat controls desired.

Work Environment

The work environment described here is representative of what an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
