Position Summary

An Infrastructure Engineer designs, builds, maintains, and optimizes the foundational IT systems that support an organization's technology environment. This includes servers, networks, storage, virtualization, and cloud services. The role ensures high availability, security, and performance of infrastructure components critical to business operations. This position requires the candidate to work onsite at our Rochester, NY facility for a minimum of three days per week, with the remaining days offering flexibility for remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and maintain enterprise infrastructure systems including servers, storage, network devices, virtualization platforms, and cloud environments.
  • Monitor system performance and conduct regular health checks to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network issues impacting infrastructure availability.
  • Implement security protocols, conduct vulnerability assessments, and maintain compliance with organizational and legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with development, network, and security teams to implement integrated solutions.
  • Automate infrastructure deployment and management using tools like Ansible, Terraform, or PowerShell.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of system failures and deploy corrective measures to avoid recurrence.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of infrastructure configurations, procedures, and policies.
  • Plan and execute infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and new technology rollouts.
  • Provide technical support and training to IT staff and end users.
  • Conduct capacity planning and recommend scalable solutions to meet future business needs.
  • Assist in disaster recovery planning and execution for critical systems.
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices.
  • Support compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements (e.g., Sarbanes Oxley, GDPR).
  • Act with a security first mindset; ensuring that systems and infrastructure are implemented with security best practices in mind.
  • After hours and ability to be on-call as required.
  • Ability to travel to other Transcat facilities to perform network maintenance as needed.
  • Model the Company’s values to influence others to perform in an aligned manner.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes and service management frameworks.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and DevOps methodologies.
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  • CompTIA Network+ or Security+

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, VMware Certified Professional, Cisco CCNA, or CompTIA Server+
  • Several years of experience managing IT infrastructure across servers, networks, storage, and cloud platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of operating systems including Windows Server, Linux, and virtualization technologies like VMware or Hyper-V.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with system monitoring, performance tuning, patching and security best practices.
  • Good understanding of networking fundamentals, security principles, and backup/recovery strategies.
  • Proficiency with scripting and automation tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
